- Mummification, Embalming and Burial
- The Egyptians used sandalwood for mummification and embalming.Sandalwood was used most famously for mummification and embalming. The oil helped to preserve the bodies of kings, queens and pharaohs. It has also been burned throughout history as an offering to gods and goddesses in many different cultures. Frankincense is said to have been used in the burial of Jesus.
- Sandalwood was believed to bring you closer to the divine.Sandalwood is believed to increase oxygen around the pituitary and pineal glands, helping produce melatonin and serotonin--hormones that are believed in many cultures to bring humans in touch with the divine. Hyssop was believed to release pain from an individual's mind.
- Frankincense was a gift to baby Jesus.Frankincense and myrrh were two of the gifts thought to be brought to the Baby Jesus. It is a spicy scent that is extracted by scoring the bark of the small tree that grows only in the Middle East, and then distilling the resin. It is still used in the Catholic Church, as it is believed to invoke the spirit of Christ.
An ancient custom was to use spikenard to anoint an illustrious guest's head and feet. Jesus was supposedly anointed twice with spikenard the week prior to his death.
Biblically, cassia, cinnamon, calamus, and myrrh were used in the holy anointing oil Jesus spoke of to Moses in Exodus 30:20-25 (along with cinnamon, calamu, and olive oil).
- Myrtle was associated with the goddess Aphrodite.Myrrh is symbolic of suffering and is produced by slicing off a piece of the bark of the myrrh tree. Fittingly, the substance that comes out is referred to as "tears."
The ancient Greeks associated myrtle with Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.
Jesus' cross was said to be made of cypress; therefore the cypress tree is often associated with death and is frequently seen in cemeteries.
- Cypress oil is still used today.Myrtle was used as an antiseptic, deodorant, astringent and sedative, as well as an aphrodisiac (thus the association with Aphrodite).
The oil of the cypress tree was known for its medicinal benefits as an antiseptic, astringent, diuretic and deodorant.
Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations burned galbanum in incense sticks and mixed it in the bath water as a perfume. The Egyptians used cedar wood as a perfume and in cosmetics.
- Cistus is believed to be the biblical Rose of Sharon.Today, cedar wood is used to help alleviate acne, eczema and dermatitis..
The scent of galbanum is very earthy and woodsy and is known for being a good detoxifier. It aids in circulation, particularly in the joints, and is known for helping muscle spasms.
Cypress oil is often used in the treatment of stress, varicose veins and oily skin. It can also be used in a douche mixture to aid in the healing process after childbirth, fending off genitourinary infections.
Cistus is a calm and soothing scent that has been used in counseling as well as in respiratory support.

ANISE
Anise Oil UsesBy Kimberley Jace, eHow ContributorAnise Oil UsesAnise oil is a pale yellow essential oil steam distilled from the seeds of Illicium verum, a small evergreen native to China. The oil has a warm, sweet, licorice scent that is sometimes used in perfumes. Anise oil also has been used since ancient times for a variety of other purposes.
- Flavoring
- The licorice scent of anise oil makes it useful as a flavoring agent for candy. It also is used to flavor tobacco products, mouthwashes and toothpaste. The ancient Romans flavored a cake with anise oil and served it after feasts such as weddings; it may have been the flavoring used in the first wedding cakes.
- This oil is sometimes used as an herbal remedy for digestive problems such as cramps, nausea and intestinal gas. It is a folk remedy for colic in infants. Anise oil may be added to laxatives to ease the cramping caused by purgatives. It may prevent vomiting and is said to cure insatiable thirst and even hangovers. Anise oil should not be used by people with acid reflux disease.
- When its vapors are inhaled or it is taken in a syrup, anise oil may help treat coughs, bronchitis and asthma. It is considered an expectorant, helping loosen phlegm. In Ayurvedic medicine, anise oil is used as an antihistamine. It is thought to stimulate the heart, brain, liver and lungs; to treat fevers and swelling and to raise blood pressure. As an aromatherapy oil, anise oil may be useful for dizziness, motion sickness and vertigo.
- This oil is used to relieve menstrual cramping, as well as the pain of labor and childbirth. It is said to encourage lactation and to bring on menstruation. Anise oil has a mildly estrogenic effect on hormones and should not be used by patients with estrogen-sensitive cancers.
- Anise oil can be used in such solutions as an eye wash; mixed with eucalyptus as a chest rub; or soaked into a cotton ball to temporarily relieve the pain of dental cavities. The oil is an insect repellent and can be used to treat skin parasites such as scabies, as well as head lice.
- The scent of anise oil attracts dogs (and sometimes has a catniplike effect on them); it is used to encourage weaning in puppies and to scent the "rabbit"--the padded bait--used in training racing greyhounds. It also attracts fish and can be used as mousetrap bait. Anise oil is sometimes given to dairy goats and cows to increase milk production, and to treat colic in animals. But the oil is poisonous to pigeons and some other birds.
- Anise oil is thought to help relaxation and emotional well-being. It also has been used as an aphrodisiac. The ancient Greeks thought anise oil on a pillow would help prevent bad dreams. And some people believe anise oil can keep away the "evil eye."

Whether it's from pregnancy, inadequate circulation, fluid retention, high blood pressure or any other cause, swollen ankles and feet are very uncomfortable. The following is a simple and enjoyable way to help relieve the swelling in the ankles and feet. It takes just a few minutes if your pressed for time.
Read on to learn how to have a relaxing time to kick your feet up.
Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructionsthings you'll need:
- Several bath towels
- Waterproof barrier (mattress pad, plastic bag)
- Foot bath or large bowl
- Water
- Several pillows
- If pregnant:
- Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) Essential Oil
- Lemon (Citrus limon) Essential Oil
- Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) Essential Oil
- If not pregnant (or above oils can also be used):
- Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) Essential Oil
- Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) Essential Oil
- Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) Essential Oil
- Optional: 2 tbsp. base oil
- How to Use Essential Oils for Swollen Ankles and Feet
- The first thing to do to help with swelling of the ankles and feet is to try to elevate the feet at least 8 inches above the heart several times a day. This helps the extra fluid in the ankles and feet to go back towards the heart and away from the ankles and feet.
- Next is to soak your feet in a foot bath or large bowl or to wrap your feet and ankles in damp towels that have been put into the large bowl. Warm or cool water can be used depending on the situation. If the swelling occurs during hot weather or pregnancy, cool water would work and feel better then warm water. If there is stiffness in the ankles and feet from the swelling warm water will help to alleviate the stiffness along with the swelling. Fill the foot bath or large bowl with the desired water temperature.
- Once the foot bath or large bowl is filled add the following essential oils and mix the oils around with your hand. For use during pregnancy add 2 drops lavender, 1 drop of lemon and 1 drop of geranium essential oil to the water. For other times add 1 drop each of lavender, cypress and fennel to the water. If not pregnant you can use either blend but if pregnant be sure to use the one for pregnancy.
- Before you use the essential oils, it is best to research the essential oil(s) to make sure that you don't have any health conditions that you shouldn't use that essential oil with. If there is one essential oil that you can't use, eliminate it from the blend and use just the two essential oils or add one of the other essential oils from the other blend. For example, if you have a health condition that requires you to not use cypress essential oil you can add the lemon or geranium essential oil to the blend.
- Now soak your feet for 5 to 10 minutes in the foot bath or bowl. If you soak them too long and the water temperature changes too much, it may make the swelling worse. Or, stack the pillows, place the waterproof barrier on top of them and place 2 towels in the large bowl of water. Once they are completely wet, wring out the extra water. Wrap one towel around each foot and ankle lightly, place your feet on top of the waterproof barrier and lay back for 5 to 10 minutes. Once your done with the foot bath or the towels, gently dry your feet.
- Steps 1, 2, 3 and 5 can be repeated as needed. They can be repeated once a day or several times a day depending on the severity of the swelling.
- If you want, after you soak your feet in the foot bath or use the towels, massage the following oil mixture below into the feet; then move up to the ankles and up to the knee. Always work from the feet to the knees this will help work the extra fluid up and away from the feet and ankles. This can be done once daily.
For pregnancy--in the 2 tbsp. base oil, add 14 drops lavender, 7 drops lemon and 7 drops geranium essential oil, mix and massage into the feet, ankles and up to the knees. You may need someone else to massage your feet, depending on how far along in your pregnancy you are it may be difficult for you to massage your own feet.
For other times--in the 2 tbsp. base oil, add 10 drops each of lavender, cypress and fennel essential oil, mix and massage into the feet, ankles and up to the knees.
- The first thing to do to help with swelling of the ankles and feet is to try to elevate the feet at least 8 inches above the heart several times a day. This helps the extra fluid in the ankles and feet to go back towards the heart and away from the ankles and feet.

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructionsthings you'll need:
- 100% essential oil of lavender
- 1Choose a 100% lavender essential oil from a reputed company. Made using a steam distillation process, the essential oil is made most commonly from the flowers of a lavender plant called Lavandula Angustifolia. Don't buy 'lavandin', which is widely available as a cheaper alternative to the 100% essential oil, but has no medicinal value at all.
- 2It is officially cough and cold season. Lavender essential oil has disinfectant properties that keep germs at bay. Make an air-freshening spray with 2 cups of water, 10 drops of lavender oil, and a quarter teaspoon of tea tree oil, and spray liberally around the house. Place cotton balls soaked in lavender essential oil in your bathrooms, your car, and in your purse.
- 3Fight hair loss using the antiseptic and antifungal properties of lavender essential oil. Natural health magazine had published a hair loss remedy that suggested combining 2 teaspoons of jojoba oil with six drops of lavender essential oil, and 9 drops of rosemary essential oil. Apply the mixture to your scalp regularly to keep the hair follicles alive when fighting hair loss. While the magazine suggested this remedy for alopecia aereata, I had used this remedy to fight post partum hair loss.
- 4Use lavender essential oil in your skin care routine for its balancing and regenerative properties. Combine a few drops with a carrier oil like sweet almond, and use as a body moisturizer. Apply it straight out of the bottle on acne, and insect bites. Take a bottle with you when hiking, and apply it on blisters.
- 5Lavender essential oil is most known for its calming, and relaxing properties. Use an aromatherapy diffuser to diffuse the oil around the house, or burn some in an aroma lamp to fight stress. Add a few drops in the bath to calm down a hyperactive child. Use a few drops on a Kleenex, or paper towel, and place it under a pillow to help with insomnia.

This is why neroli oil is often found blended with other essential oils. Benefits of neroli oil include reducing redness in skin, helping to moisturize and clear acne, and increasing circulation. - 1Fill the basin of the diffuser with water. The water should be warm or room temperature. Ensure your diffuser is in a safe place where it can stand level.
- 2Light the unscented tea light candle, and place it in the candle holder at the bottom of the diffuser. The candle is what warms the water in the basin of the diffuser. You do not want any scent from the candle to interfere with the scent of your neroli essential oil.
- 3Add two to three drops of neroli essential oil to the water and allow the diffuser to fill the room with the scent of the oil. The therapeutic effects of the notes in neroli oil will begin to take place in minutes. If you wish, you may add a drop or two of another essential oil such as a flower or citrus oil, which both blend nicely with neroli.
- 4Check on the diffuser periodically to ensure there is still water in the basin. The heat from the candle will cause the water to slowly evaporate. If the basin is glass or ceramic, it will scorch and eventually crack from the heat of the candle if the water is allowed to evaporate completely. Adding cold water to an empty, hot basin will also crack it if it is ceramic or glass.

- Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) is an herb of the valerian family. Spikenard essential oil is steam distilled from the roots of the plant. The ancient Egyptians and Romans made spikenard into an ointment, which the New Testament reports that Mary Magdalene used to anoint the feet of Christ at the Last Supper. Modern spikenard oil uses include medicinal, skin care and emotional.
- According to the "Essential Oils Desk Reference," the medicinal properties of spikenard oil are that it helps fight bacteria, fungus and inflammation, and it is relaxing and helps stimulate the immune system. Spikenard's antifungal properties may help get rid of athlete's foot and toenail fungus.

To help you sleep, you can diffuse spikenard essential oil or place one to three drops of the oil on a cotton ball or tissue and inhale for a minimum of 30 to 60 seconds.
Spikenard oil may be useful for balancing hormones in both women and men. According to aromatherapist K.G. Stiles, spikenard is especially useful during onset of puberty and for menopausal issues in women.
- Spikenard essential oil also helps nourish and regenerate the skin through stimulating circulation of blood, lymph and nerve supply. According to "Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art," spikenard is good for all skin and hair types but especially effective for dry or mature skin.
Spikenard oil uses for skin care include relief of scalp irritation, skin inflammation, rashes and psoriasis. Dilute spikenard essential oil in a carrier oil and apply to skin. Patch test first to make sure you are not sensitive to the oil.

VETIVER
What Is Vetiver?By Laura Dixon, eHow ContributorVetiver is a plant with many purposes, ranging from its use as an ingredient in the vast majority of high-end perfumes to its role in conserving surrounding soil and water. With roots in India, vetiver is a form of clump grass which has been cultivated throughout the world. Over the centuries, this sweet-smelling grass has been put to use by indigenous cultures and modern ones, and it remains an essential crop today.
- Function
- The vetiver plant is most frequently used for the sweet, earthy fragrance extracted from its roots, which is then used to create essential oils. Vetiver essential oil is estimated to be included in 90% of all perfumes sold in the Western world, and is also frequently used in aromatherapy candles and incense.
- Traditionally, this type of grass was considered a medicinal plant and it was included in various remedies by cultures across South Asia and Africa. In India, people still weave vetiver roots into house mats to help cool their home interiors during long, hot summers. Some Indians place a small pouch filled with vetiver into their drinking water to add flavor.
- Vetiver grows up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) high and can widen into clumps measuring 1 meter (more than 3 feet) or more. This fragrant grass grows in tall blades with long, thin leaves on which purple flowers bloom. Vetiver is different from most grasses in that its root system descends about 2 (6 feet 6 inches) to 4 meters (13 feet) into the ground rather than spreading horizontally.
- A native Indian plant, vetiver is an automatically recurring grass of the Poaceae plant species that was given its name by India's Tamil ethnic group. In the northern and western regions of India, the plant is widely called Khus, and it came to be known as cuscus grass in English. While this type of grass originated in India, these days vetiver is grown in countries across the globe, with other major cultivators including Haiti, Java and Reunion Island.
- Vetiver is a non-invasive plant species, meaning that it re-grows without any outside help and is easy to cultivate and control. Its particular root structure makes vetiver an ideal plant to aid in erosion control in areas of the world with hotter climates. Since the its roots grow two to four meters downward , vetiver acts as a protective plant to stabilize rice paddies, sloping fields, and riverbanks. Vetiver's tendency to grow in tightly packed clumps also allows the grass to serve as a blockade against excess water runoff.
Indeed, an entire soil conservation project known as the Vetiver System has developed in recent years based on this grass' non-invasive nature and ability to aid in stabilizing surrounding earth and water systems.
